Is it Time for Air Conditioner Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When any big change in weather hits and we start getting calls about air conditioners that aren't producing cool air, most of them can be linked back to a lack of regular air conditioner service and maintenance. If air conditioner concerns are not addressed, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family out to dry. However, there are a couple warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for air conditioner service or replacement before your system stops running.

Air Conditioner Age

The typical life expectancy of air conditioners is between 12-17 years. If your air conditioner is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start air conditioner shopping now. Buying a new air conditioner isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself a bit of time to look through and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Air conditioners lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Air Conditioner Repairs

The last few years of an air conditioner’s life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on air conditioner repair the previous two years - a new system may be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any odd noises coming from your system? Air conditioners start making strange noises around the end of their life. If your air conditioner is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older air conditioners don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies could notice an uptick in their symptoms. A couple other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these indicators sound like what you are undergoing with your air conditioner, it could be time to start thinking about a new system.
